The SLCUSD Summer Experience is an innovative approach to traditional Summer School. The district has spent the last 3 years exploring research, best practices, and ways to offer a Summer Program that is engaging for all students. A variety of theme based academic, and enrichment classes are offered, through a flexible attendance schedule. Students who request courses must commit to attending for the full day (3 classes/day) for all 6 weeks, June 17 - July 31. The program is open to current San Luis Coastal kindergarten through high school students (current 12th graders who need credit recovery). Current TK students are being offered childcare only. Please click here for more information on Kinder Care with Community Partners. How is Summer Experience different? Unlike traditional Summer School, the Summer Experience is open to all students, is a full day program, and offers enrichment classes in addition to core academic programs. It is offered five days a week for grades 1-8 and four days a week for grades 9-12. 5th-8th Graders Participating at High Schools Through Measure D, our high school campuses now have amazing facilities we want our younger students to enjoy (i.e. swimming pool, theatre). Campus supervision will be provided and interaction between grades 5-8 and 9-12 students will be limited. Credit Recovery Students who’ve earned a D” grade in a class may retake the class for a better grade - grade recovery. Students who’ve earned an F” grade in a class will retake the class - credit recovery. Students taking a class for the first time will take a class as original credit." Elective classes are taken for credit. Enrichment classes are offered as unique, stand alone classes at various times and are not offered for high school credit. Meals and Transportation Free transportation will be provided in a similar fashion to how it is provided during the school year. Our award-winning SLCUSD Food Service department will provide school meals (snack and lunch) free of charge for all participating students. Cost and Child Care The Summer Experience is FREE to all participants during the summer of 2024, including costs associated with childcare provided by partner agencies. (Reminder, SLO Parks and Rec will offer care at Bishop's Peak, and CL Smith. YMCA will offer care at Baywood. Families who request care will need to finalize enrollment separately, with these agencies in the spring. In the event that there is high demand for care, TK students with siblings enrolled in Summer Experience will be given priority.)
